I've been married to a German since 2003 and I'm also the mother of two young Germans/Americans. We tend to visit family in former East Berlin every year. I love the rebel, artsy, punk, tolerant, misfit vibe of my in-laws' neighborhood of Friedrichshain.
Our last visit took place during Pride Month in 2021 and I felt inspired to make this version of a rainbow flag. Originally it was supposed to be a color study of chakras, (starting with red on the bottom going to purple at the top). However, I didn't want it to be confused with an upside-down pride flag, so I flipped it over and made this instead. I enjoy layering different hues of the same color family together to make patterned effects.
This was highly improvisational and is a kind of conversation with the colors, paper/negative space, and shapes. I enjoyed the process but also getting this as the final result. Those drawn to this image will feel a sense of love, acceptance, a celebration of uniqueness and diversity, and a soothing connection to all the visible colors of the spectrum.
