This drawing was made to honor and remember six of my favorite Malawian birds that I see in the city and out in the bush.
From left to right: Top: Red Bishop, Blue Waxbill, and Kingfisher. Bottom: Yellow-Bellied Sunbird, Lilac Breasted Roller, and Beeeater.
The backgrounds and frames are inspired by local chitenje patterns and colors found in the textiles here in Malawi.
"The meanings of birds and their symbolism varies greatly from representing immortality, departed souls, and spirit messengers to representing fertility, protection, and strength. The difference in the meaning of their symbolism and representations is rooted in their different species and kinds...Of all the animals, having bird spirit animals looking after you is the biggest honor among all. These creatures are the closets to heaven. They connect humans to the spirits above and materialize ‘as above, so below.’" Read more

Description from Merchant:
All drawings are created on acid-free archival heavyweight paper. I use Tombow dual tip watercolor pens which are set in place with fixative. Paintings are made on triple primed canvas panels and the acrylic paints are then fixed with varnish. For best possible protection against fading over time, original artwork should be kept out of direct light. Drawings should be protected by a sheet of UV filtered glass.
