Grounded is a meditation on being in balance with the earth, putting down roots, and being connected to the physical body. This image symbolizing the root chakra, offers a sense of safety, security, connection, and having a place in this world to those who are drawn to it.
The root chakra is the first of seven main energy centers in the body located at the base of the spine. The concept of chakras dates back to ancient India, as early as 1500 BC.
In Malawi, I have a garden where I grow red onions among other things. I used one as a model for this painting showing the roots as connected to the soil and its green shoots reaching towards the heavens. It's meant to show the balance between body, mind, and spirit.
In the soil is a traditional pattern found in Tanzania, a country where I was teaching in 2005. The pattern comes from a handmade bag I was given by a family in Moshi as a gift after I helped their children obtain their school fees.
This painting can help those drawn to it to feel a sense of belonging, trust, community, being present, and the ability to not only survive but thrive in this world.
