The paper crane is a symbol of peace, love, and hope, and healing during challenging times. Paper cranes are an origami classic, made popular in American culture by the stories inspired by the Japanese legend that one who creates a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish.

A few years ago I was given a paper crane as a party favor from my friend's wedding in the USA. It traveled to all the places we've lived since then including Italy, Myanmar, and now Malawi. One day recently my son was going through an old packing box and rediscovered it. We hung it up and just two days later I learned that the woman who made it, Dr. Ruth Starratt, an artist, educator, and Japanese culture enthusiast from Massachusetts, USA had just passed away unexpectedly. I decided to paint her crane and also infuse the background with more lucky Japanese animals to bring good fortune, healing, and prosperity to anyone drawn to this image.

All drawings are created on acid-free archival heavyweight paper. I use Tombow dual tip watercolor pens which are set in place with fixative. Paintings are made on triple primed canvas panels and the acrylic paints are then fixed with varnish. For best possible protection against fading over time, original artwork should be kept out of direct light. Drawings should be protected by a sheet of UV filtered glass.
