Known in sub-Saharan Africa as inpangela, or, “one who is in a hurry," guinea fowl are known for their industriousness and are powerful symbols of a can-do attitude and spirited work ethic. They also are associated around the world with protection and motherhood due to their fierce determination and courage that they exhibit as guard animals and their displays of tenderness with their flock.

Homestead.org writes, "Inpangela comes from the verb pangela which means, 'to wake up in the morning and go to work.' She is alert to every risk and opportunity. She is an early riser, ready for the day ahead... Everywhere the guinea hen has gone, she has been recognized for her willingness to stay alert, work hard, and confront danger."
Guinea fowl, while perhaps less impressive to see in nature than a lion, elephant, or rhino are nevertheless my favorite animals here in Malawi. I love watching them loll about in groups, chatting and squawking to each other as they go about their seemingly important errands. They are almost cartoonishly plump, reminding me of what a set of Scottish bagpipes might look like if they were to come to life. I drew this group when I was visiting Lake Malawi and Nankoma Island across from Salima Bay. I aimed to capture their essence while pairing them with another Malawian favorite of mine, the chitenge-wrapped bottle caps as the background.

Description from Merchant:
All drawings are created on acid-free archival heavyweight paper. I use Tombow dual tip watercolor pens which are set in place with fixative. Paintings are made on triple primed canvas panels and the acrylic paints are then fixed with varnish. For best possible protection against fading over time, original artwork should be kept out of direct light. Drawings should be protected by a sheet of UV filtered glass.
